A concrete drainage canal in Baja California, Mexico, can look like empty infrastructure. On one hot afternoon, dry wind ran along its steep walls. At the bottom, pressed against the hard ground, lay a Rottweiler who could not move.
She had just enough strength for one sharp cry. It echoed up the concrete, and then the canal went quiet. Her eyes slowly closed.
The Cry That Carried Up the Walls
Several men walking past looked over the edge and saw her far below. What they saw alarmed them enough that the news began to travel.
A video of the dog was shared online, and it reached rescuers from The Cantu Foundation. A team set out for the canal soon afterward.
How She Ended Up Down There
When Fatima Guevara and her team arrived, they heard what witnesses said had happened. A truck had stopped at the edge of the canal, and a cardboard box with the dog inside was pushed out and left teetering on the rim. When the dog shifted, the box gave way. She slid down the steep concrete slope with nothing to slow her fall.
Fatima later recalled the sound the dog made. “It was heartbreaking,” she shared. “That cry we heard… it wasn’t just fear. It was the last bit of strength she had left.”
A Rescue Plan Built Around Fragility
The depth of the canal was only one of the challenges. The dog’s body was heavy and limp, and she appeared drained by something that had started well before the fall. As the rescuers got closer, she could not lift her head.
That shaped everything. Any plan to bring her out had to account for her weakness as well as for the height and the steep walls.
Soft Ropes and One Pull at a Time
Volunteers climbed down into the canal and moved slowly. Soft ropes were secured around her body, and each movement was measured before it was made.
Then the team began lifting her up the vertical wall together, one careful pull after another. It was slow work. Eventually she reached the top and was brought back into the light.
Not the Injuries They Feared
She was taken directly to a veterinary clinic, and the rescuers prepared for bad news. The result was not what they expected: the dog had no broken bones.
Her condition pointed elsewhere. She was suffering from severe exhaustion, deep neglect and prolonged starvation. The fall had not caused her collapse. Her body had been failing well before she ended up in the canal.
A Name, and Then a Few Steps
In the care of The Cantu Foundation, the Rottweiler was given a name: Flor.
Her recovery came in small, visible stages. At first she could not move at all. Then she could sit. Then one day she stood, and her first steps were hesitant and unsure, but they were real.
As her strength returned, her personality came with it. Flor turned out to be gentle, playful and a little cheeky.
Sprinklers, Soccer Balls and a Foster Home in San Diego
Once she was strong enough, Flor crossed the border to San Diego, California, where a foster home was waiting. Her foster mom, Kajsa, quickly looked past the tough appearance of a big Rottweiler.

In Kajsa’s view, Flor is a giant baby. Her favorite pastime is chasing soccer balls with open, unguarded joy. The dog who once lay motionless at the bottom of a canal now spends afternoons running through sprinklers and soaking up the sun.
Still Waiting for the Right Family
Flor is now ready for a forever home, one where love is not temporary and where she will not be discarded again.

What stands out to the people who know her is how openly she still trusts people. “She has every reason not to,” Kajsa shared. “But she loves everyone she meets. That kind of spirit… it doesn’t break.”
The story that began with one cry in a canal has reached a dog chasing a ball, and she is now waiting for the family who will keep her.
