Two Swollen Puppies Couldn't Rise From A Roadside — A Month Of Care Brought Them Running

Beside a road, two puppies lay in the dirt and could not get up. Their bellies were so swollen that standing was out of the question, and each breath looked like an effort.

Their mother stayed a short distance away, watching. When rescuers arrived, it was clear this was something more serious than a pair of hungry strays.

A Mother Keeping Her Distance

The rescuers had not been prepared for what they found. The puppies were weak and almost motionless. The mother seemed frightened as strangers moved closer to her young. The condition of the puppies suggested an illness that had been developing for some time.

The two were taken straight to an emergency clinic and given the names Nong King and Nong Thon. Once there, their breathing was faint and they appeared exhausted, as though they had been unwell for a long while without treatment. At that point, nobody could say whether their small bodies would recover.

The Results That Explained The Swelling

Veterinary tests soon gave the team an answer. Both puppies had severe anemia, with red blood cell levels dangerously low. A large amount of fluid had also collected in their abdomens. The pressure bore down on their organs and made even slight movements painful.

The vets treated the situation as urgent. Their first step was to carefully draw off the fluid and ease the pressure inside the puppies’ bellies. Relief came quickly, but it dealt with only one part of the problem. The underlying causes still had to be treated.

A Month Of Daily Treatment

Recovery was not fast. It took a full thirty days of close monitoring, and the plan addressed several problems at the same time:

  • Repeated drainage of fluid, so pressure would not build up again
  • Strong antibiotics to fight infections that could not be seen
  • Blood-support treatments to help rebuild their weakened systems
  • Parasite removal to stop further blood loss

No single step could have done the job alone. Combined, they gave the puppies a chance to regain strength while the clinic team checked on them every day.

The Days When Things Began To Turn

By the second day, something had shifted. Their bellies were still swollen, but both puppies began eating with real appetite. After the weakness of those first hours, it was an encouraging sign.

On day three, the progress could be seen from across the room. Nong Thon, who had been unable to stand when found, ran down the clinic hallway. The sound of small paws on the floor was a sharp contrast to the stillness of the roadside.

Improvement continued with each day that followed. Their eyes, which had looked hollow when they arrived, became more curious, and the puppies seemed more at ease with the people looking after them.

Life After The Clinic

Nong King and Nong Thon have made a full recovery. The fluid is gone from their bellies, and they have left the clinic for a permanent home where they are looked after.

Their treatment was possible because supporters helped pay for the heavy medical costs. Thirty days of intensive care, including repeated procedures and medication, was not something the puppies could have obtained on their own. What happened to their mother after the rescue is not mentioned in the account.

What The Roadside Story Leaves Behind

The puppies who once could not lift themselves out of the dirt now play and bark. Their turnaround came from prompt veterinary action, patient daily treatment and people who chose to help.

Their case is also a reminder that a young animal can be gravely ill even when it is small and quiet. Nong King and Nong Thon needed the right care at the right time, and they got it. Running and wagging tails now mark the distance between them and that roadside.
