A Dog in a Field Crate With Dyed Ears Kept Wagging Through Three Medical Emergencies

Someone had left a crate in a barren field. Inside it lay a small dog who did not move.

When rescuers reached her, she was barely breathing. Her skin was burned from lying in her own waste for far too long, and the damage pointed to a long period without proper care. She would later be named Junie. At that point she was in grave condition, and no one yet knew how she had ended up there.

One more detail stood out. Her ears had been dyed bright pink and purple.

The Crate in the Empty Field

The crate was filthy and looked as though it had been forgotten. Junie lay inside and did not respond to the people who found her.

What the scene showed was clear enough: the burns on her skin and the state of the crate suggested she had gone without care for a long time. Who had put her there, and for how long, has not been established.

Colors That Told a Different Story

On a plush toy, pink and purple ears might look playful. On a dog this ill, they struck rescuers very differently. They described the dye as a sign that she had been treated like a decoration rather than a living animal.

Who dyed her ears, and why, is unknown. The source does not say, and the dye was not the most urgent problem. Her breathing, her burns and her weakness were.

Too Cold to Measure

At the hospital, Junie was already fading. Her blood pressure was dangerously low. Her body temperature had dropped so far that it could not even be measured.

The first hours were a race to stabilize her. The hardest stretch was still ahead.

Three Emergencies, One After Another

Just as she seemed to steady, Junie’s body was hit by a series of crises:

  • A sudden drop in red blood cells. Her count crashed, and she received an emergency transfusion.
  • A life-threatening clot. A large clot formed in her jugular vein and swelled her face and neck. Her chances of surviving it were put at 50/50.
  • Pneumonia. An infection settled in her lungs while she was still fighting everything else.

Any one of these could have ended her story. Yet through the pain, the weakness and the effects of her medication, Junie did something small each time a person came near her crate. She wagged her tail.

Small Steps Back

One rescuer stayed with her through the long course of treatment. “I can’t even begin to understand how someone could do this,” the rescuer said. “It’s hard not to imagine what she went through.”

Her days now held steady attention and warmth, something she may never have experienced before. Improvement came in stages. First she lifted her head. Then she began eating again. Small movements followed, and then steps of her own.

She was no longer only surviving. Her recovery had started to show.

The Hallway That Filled With Staff

The day Junie was strong enough to leave, the hospital hallway filled with people. Doctors, nurses and other staff who had taken part in her care gathered to see her go.

There were tears and quiet smiles. For those who had watched her come so close to slipping away, it was a moment they knew was rare.

From the Hospital to New York

Junie’s journey did not end at the hospital doors. She traveled to New York, where a new life was waiting. So was a woman who saw her not as damaged but as remarkably brave. Junie now had a forever mom.

A Bed Instead of a Filthy Floor

Today, Junie’s world looks nothing like the field where she was found. A warm, soft bed has replaced the cold, filthy floor. A furry companion offers friendship and play, and her days are filled with the affection she had gone without.

Her story did not stop in that crate. It continued because someone cared enough to stop, to help and to believe she was worth saving. What was done to her does not define her, and the crowd in that hospital hallway saw what her recovery meant.
