Nina's Tumor Weighed Nearly 13 Pounds — Then Veterinarians Had to Decide How to Operate

When rescuers reached Nina in North Memphis, she had very little strength left. The 8-year-old Pitbull Terrier was exhausted, and her body showed signs of a long period without proper care.

Then the team saw the mass she was carrying. The tumor weighed close to 13 pounds. Nina was still alive, though, and what happened next would depend on careful decisions rather than speed.

What Rescuers Found When They Reached Her

The mass was not the only sign that something had gone badly wrong. Nina had lost a great deal of weight. She was running a dangerously high fever, and an untreated infection had spread through her body.

The team also found two smaller growths along her mammary line. Together, these findings showed how fragile she was. Any treatment would need to be planned step by step, because her body had little room for error.

A video shared with her story follows her from rescue through a high-risk surgery.

Strength Came Before Surgery

Nina was taken to a rescue facility and placed in intensive veterinary care. Her condition was critical, and the team recognized that acting too quickly could be as dangerous as waiting too long.

The tumor was not the first target. Her strength was. Veterinarians treated the infection, rehydrated her slowly and began offering food in gentle amounts to rebuild her reserves. According to the rescue account, each step was measured and cautious.

Her response was encouraging. Her fever came down, and her body began to respond to treatment. Survival now looked like a realistic possibility.

An Operation With Little Margin

Once Nina was stable enough, the veterinary team prepared to operate. The procedure was far from routine. The size of the tumor and its location made the surgery extremely risky, and the team saw no other path forward.

The operation was long and delicate. Surgeons removed the large tumor along with the two smaller growths. Testing afterward gave a clearer picture: the smaller growths were benign, while the large mass was diagnosed as a soft tissue sarcoma.

The surgery was a success, and Nina came through it.

Healing Could Not Be Rushed

Recovery brought its own challenges. Nina’s body was worn down, and her healing had to proceed at its own pace. She stayed under constant veterinary supervision while the team monitored her wounds and helped her regain strength.

The early progress was subtle: a slightly better appetite, a little more energy, a steadier look in her eyes. Over the following days these small changes added up. She ate better, moved more comfortably and was able to rest without constant pain.

A Quiet Place to Continue Recovering

When she was strong enough, Nina moved into a foster home where her recovery could continue. The rescue account describes it as a completely different world from what she had known, with no cold floors and no fear, only stability.

Soft bedding replaced the harsh conditions of her past, and a steady routine took the place of daily struggle. Her transformation became visible. Her coat regained its shine, her body grew healthier and stronger, and her eyes, which had looked tired and distant, began to brighten.

Rest, Curiosity and Trust

In foster care, Nina regained more than her physical health. She rested peacefully, explored her surroundings with growing curiosity and accepted the care of the people around her.

That ease mattered. A dog who had spent so long simply getting through each day could now experience the day itself.

Nina Today

Today, Nina is healthy, safe and surrounded by care. Her path from severe neglect to recovery included emergency treatment, a dangerous surgery, a period of careful healing and a foster home that gave her time to regain her footing.

The rescue team’s account describes a dog who endured illness and pain in silence and now rests in warmth and safety. Her story shows what a patient, well-planned effort can achieve when help arrives for a life that is still worth fighting for.
