David Fredman knew this stretch of road well. He drove north under the I-70 overpass on his way to work, and nothing along it usually held his attention.
That morning, something beside the pavement did. From the driver’s seat it looked like junk someone had left behind. A second glance told him it was not.
Something Wrong by the Power Box
The shape was hanging from a power box. When it moved, David realized he was looking at a dog. An electrical cord was wrapped around the animal’s neck, and he was straining to keep his head up.
“I just froze,” David said later. “I couldn’t understand how something like this could even happen.”
He pulled his truck over and hurried to the dog. Up close, the dog looked old and frail. He would later be identified as Max, who was 16. His hind legs trembled and only just touched the ground, and his breathing was quick and ragged. Each effort to move seemed to leave him weaker.

Seconds That Counted
David called 911. Almost as soon as he did, he sensed that waiting for responders might cost too much time.
He took out his knife and cut through the cord in one motion. Max dropped to the ground. He was alive, but he could not get to his feet. His thin body shook, and his chest heaved as he tried to pull air back in.
David picked him up and drove him to KC Pet Project, hoping the dog would make it through.
The Owner, a Mile Away
David could not have known that someone nearby was already looking for this dog. About a mile from the overpass, a man named D-Von had woken that morning to find Max gone.
Max had been part of D-Von’s life for 16 years. He described him as family, not simply a pet. As the hours passed, D-Von had no answers. Then his phone rang. Max had been found, and he was alive.

When D-Von saw his dog again, the mark left by the cord was still visible around Max’s neck.
A Thank-You and an Open Question
D-Von and David met soon afterward. There were tears, hugs and a good deal of disbelief. “Thank you,” D-Von kept telling him. “You saved his life.”
Still, one question hung over the reunion. How did a 16-year-old dog end up suspended under a highway overpass? It might have been a terrible accident. It might not have been.

David has his doubts. “From the way it looked,” he said, “it really didn’t seem accidental.”
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from the area to determine whether someone harmed Max on purpose. As of this account, no cause has been established.
Home, for Now
What is certain is where Max is today. He is safe, resting beside the man who has known him for 16 years, and recovering from a morning that came close to being his last.
The investigation is still open, and the full explanation may not be known for some time. For now, the record shows a commuter who slowed down, stopped, and acted quickly enough to give an old dog more time at home.
